Sushama Deshpande has been an active theatre practitioner for more than forty years. She is a writer, director and actor known for portraying strong women characters. Her notable works include ‘Savitribai Phule’, portraying the life of folk artists of Maharashtra – specifically the Tamasha women, depicting the women saints of Maharashtra through their poetry, plays portraying the life of sex workers, and Dalit writer Urmila Pawar’s autobiography Aaydaan. She is also involved with community theatre. Having learned the techniques of Theatre of the Oppressed with Augusto Boal, she applies these in the theatre work she does with rural women.
