T P Ashoka


T P Ashoka is a well-known critic and scholar in Kannada who has been teaching and writing on literature, film and theatre for the last four decades. Apart from teaching English language and literature in an autonomous college in Sagar, he has conducted more than four hundred short-term workshops on literature, film and theatre all over Karnataka. He is a well-known columnist and translator too. He has published book reviews in major dailies in Kannada and English including Prajavani, Vijaya Karnataka, Indian Express and The Hindu. Vaidehi Kathana, his full-length critical study of Vaidehi’s works, has been translated into English and published by Manipal University Press. Ashoka has authored more than thirty books in Kannada which include eighteen collections of critical essays and several monographs and full-length studies of major Kannada writers like Kuvempu, Shivarama Karantha, Masthi, U R Ananthamurthy, Poornachandra Tejaswi, H S Venkatesha Murthy, Vaidehi and Bolwar Mohammed Kunhi. He has received several prizes, awards and honours from various prestigious institutions like Karnataka Sahitya Academy, Kannada Sahitya Parishath, Mysore University, Govinda Pai Research Institute. In 2016 He received the Masthi Prashasthi for lifetime contribution to literary criticism. His Kathana Bharathi, studies in Indian literature, published by Manipal University Press, won the Kendra Sahitya Akademi award in 2017.
